Korea-Australia Connection Initiative
Call for Proposals
The Korea Arts Management Service (KAMS) and the Australia Council for the Arts have partnered on the Korea-Australia Connection Initiative to support new collaborative projects involving performing artists and companies from Australia and Korea.
The initiative aims to encourage long-term creative exchanges and to build market knowledge, expertise and networks for artists, companies, and producers in both regions. This is the second year of the initiative. In 2011, it supported Strange Fruit and Noreum Machi's In the Shadow of the Dragon and Not Yet It's Difficult and Wuturi's AMPERS&ND.
Who may apply?
Korean and Australian performing artists, companies and producers may apply. The initiative is open to individuals, groups and organisations.
Applicants must have a collaborative project involving artists from Australia and Korea that will occur between November 2012 and December 2013. The project can be either in planning or development.
What the initiative will support
The initiative will support high-quality creative collaborations between artists and companies in Korea and Australia.
Support is available for original, contemporary performing arts projects only. This includes dance, music, theatre and hybrid projects, and excludes classical music and commercial projects.
Applicants can apply for support to seed fund a new work or further develop an existing creative collaboration. Projects must have an artistic outcome and a market development plan for the project.
Eligible activities include:
- creative development: the development stages of a new creative work, including research or workshops with the key artists to discuss, plan, and create the project
- co-productions.
We will support up to two projects in 2012-13. Applicants may apply for up to AU$40,000 towards their project.
Eligible costs include (Australia Council):
- salaries and fees for the artists and crew
- travel costs - including flights, ground travel, accommodation, visas and per diems
- venue and technical hire costs
- marketing, PR and translation costs.
Eligible costs exclude (Korea Arts Management Service):
- administrative labour costs (including salaries and fees for both the artists and administration staff, hired by the company)
- operating costs (excluding public utility charges, per diems, communication expenses and consumable supplies)
- acquisition of property.
KAMS and the Australia Council will allocate funding to the successful applicants in two installments - half of the total budget in November 2012 and half in March 2013. The time difference between the two installments is due to KAMS and the Australia Council's different fiscal years.
Please note that funding through KAMS for the Korean project partner will be paid through their card system. Further details on the card system are provided in the Korean version of the guidelines.
Other support to successful applicants will include:
- travel costs to participate in Connection Box to discuss and develop the collaborative project (see below)
- opportunity to showcase/pitch the work at the Performing Arts Market in Seoul (PAMS) 2013
- advice and support from KAMS and the Australia Council during the entire project period on market development planning.
Applicants may not be awarded the full amount requested, depending on the scale of activity and the evaluation of the overall proposal.
Connection Box
KAMS and the Australia Council will co-host Connection Box, a five-day workshop in Seoul (1-5 December 2012) to enable successful applicants to share ideas for developing their projects and engage in skills development.
Depending on the nature of collaborative projects selected, Connection Box activities may also include market intelligence workshops and information and feedback sessions open to the wider performing arts sector.
Individuals, groups and organisations applying for support through the initiative must be available to participate in Connection Box.
Ineligible projects
The initiative does not support touring of existing works in Korea and/or Australia.
In Australia, major performing arts companies, and companies receiving international funds as part of their key organisation support through the Australia Council, are ineligible to apply.
In Korea, existing projects that have already been supported by other government agencies and foundations, or that have received funding from the Korea Arts Management Service within the same fiscal year, are ineligible for support.
Assessment process
Throughout October 2012, performing arts industry panels convened by the Australia Council and KAMS will jointly evaluate the applications against the following criteria:
1. A demonstrated ability to coordinate an international collaboration project
How will you resource and manage this project? Have you managed an international collaboration previously? If not, where are you seeking support and advice to assist you?
2. A demonstrated understanding of the region
Why is your work a good fit for Korea and Australia? How does this project fit with your international market development plan?
3. Impact of the project
Why do you want to undertake this collaborative project? What do you anticipate the strategic impact of the collaboration will be for you/your company’s creative, market and career development? Will this collaboration be sustainable in the long-term? How will this project assist you to make connections in Korea and Australia? What other partnerships will you pursue to support the work? Have you identified potential presenters for the work – if so, who are they?
The Australia Council and KAMS will announce the successful projects at the end of October 2012 on their websites and notify applicants by email.
Korean partner(s) must apply to KAMS and Australian partner(s) must apply to the Australia Council.
To apply, please fill in the application form and submit with the required materials by post and email to the addresses below by Friday 7 September 2012.
