개념정의 1985년 10월 15일부터 10월 18일까지 국립현대미술관 전문위원 유준상의 기획으로 국립현대미술관에서 열린 전시이다. 작고 작가 36명과 현역 작가 139명의 작품이 출품되었다. 광복 이후 40년 동안의 민족 발전상을 미술을 통해 조명하기 위해 광복과 관련된 작품들을 시대별, 분야별로 전시한 대규모 기념전이다. 한국화, 서양화, 조각, 서예, 공예 등 5개 분야를 망라한 출품작들은 1945년부터 1980년대에 이르기까지 연도별로 골고루 분포되어 있다. 전시 추진위원회는 작가 위주가 아닌 작품 위주로 전시 작품을 선정하였으며, 작품 배치 또한 분야별이 아닌 시대별로 하여 흐름을 확인할 수 있게 하였다.
개념정의(영문) The 40 Years of Modern Art Exhibition was held at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea from October 15 to October 18, 1985 under the direction of Yoo Jun-sang, an expert member of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. 36 deceased artists and 139 living artists presented their works. It was a large-scale memorial exhibition that displayed works related to Independence by period and genre to shed light on the development of the nation for the 40 years following Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule. Entries covering five fields, including Eastern-style painting, Western-style painting, sculpture, calligraphy, and crafts, were evenly divided year by year from 1945 to the 1980s. The Exhibition Promotion Committee selected works to mainly focus on artwork, not artists, and the layout of works was also decided by period rather than by genre to allow visitors see the trajectory of Korean art.

개념정의(일문) 1985年10月15日から10月18日まで、国立現代美術館の専門委員ユ・ジュンサンの企画により国立現代美術館で開かれた展覧会。故人の作家36人と現役作家139人の作品が出品された。独立以降の40年間の民族の発展像に美術を通じて光を当てるため、光復と関連する作品を時代別、分野別に展示した大規模な記念展であった。韓国画、西洋画、彫刻、書芸、工芸の5つの分野を網羅する出品作は、1945年から1980年代に至るまで、年度別に万遍なく分布している。展示推進委員会は、作家中心ではなく作品中心に展示作品を選び、作品の配置も分野別ではなく時代別にして、流れがわかるようにした。
